The official kick-off event on May 1, 2018 tagged "Start Something Big".
gallupARTS solicited "one word" from community members of their aspiration of Downtown Gallup. Words were collected at the Kick-off Event, via Facebook, and at ArtsCrawl. Words were scored based on volume of submissions and turned into a wordle that was brought alive at the May ArtsCrawl by local muralist Bear Mescale. HANds-ON Community Workshop
This community workshop involved dividing into two groups to develop artistic concepts for Coal Avenue.
Chalk the walk
During the June ArtsCrawl assisted by local artists, community members were asked to chalk their design dreams for Coal Avenue.
Through a competitive selection process, two groups were chosen to design, build, and install parklets during the July ArtsCrawl. A parklet is a sidewalk extension that provides more space and amenities for people using the street. Usually parklets are installed on parking lanes and use several parking spaces. ... Parklets offer a place to stop, to sit, and to rest while taking in the activities of the street.
Final COmmunity Workshop
This final public workshop was the community unveiling of the three conceptual designs including the Traditional Mainstreet, Mainstreet with Parklets, and Plaza Street. The community got to vote on the option and design features they liked most. This event was standing rooms only.
City Council Presentation
The Design Team presented the three design options and recommended option to the City Council on September 11, 2018.
